Family & Child Support Organizations

The Cridge Centre for the Family: Respite & Respitality (R&R) Services

Community Living Victoria (CLV)

Supports people with intellectual disabilities together with their families, support networks and community.

Developmental Disabilities Association

A community living agency that provides over 50 community-based programs and services to children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families in Vancouver and Richmond.

Health & Medical Support Services

Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island

Supports children and youth living with complex needs.

B.C. Children’s Hospital

Provides care for the most seriously ill or injured children from across British Columbia.

Canuck Place Children’s Hospice

BC’s pediatric palliative care provider for children with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them. Their team of physicians, nurses, counsellors, therapists, staff, and volunteers provide medical respite care, pain and symptom management, art, music, and recreation therapy, end-of-life care, grief, loss, and bereavement counselling, all at no cost.

OneAbility: Adaptive Sports & Physical Activity

Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association (VTRA)

Offers programs to children and adults who live in the Greater Victoria area. The disabilities include but are not limited to cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, intellectual and emotional challenges, and hearing or vision impairment.

Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM): Department of Music Therapy

The non-verbal, creative, and affective nature of music facilitates contact, learning, self-expression, communication and growth. The VCM’s Music Therapy sessions meet the needs of children from as young as 18 months old, to the elderly. They work with those of all ages with exceptionalities, conditions, or illnesses and to improve the quality of life for all.

Education Support

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF)

Supports the principles of equity and opportunity for all learners, and the concept of inclusion, while recognizing that inclusion may not be appropriate for all students some, or all, of the time.

A BC Ministry of Education Provincial Resource Program established to assist school districts in utilizing technology with students whose access to the curriculum is restricted.

Financial Information

Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

A Canada-wide registered matched savings plan specific for people with disabilities. It is designed as a long-term savings plan to help the holder be better financially prepared for their future.

Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

A non-refundable tax credit that helps persons with disabilities or their supporting persons reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay. An individual may claim the disability amount once they are eligible for the DTC. This amount includes a supplement for persons under 18 years of age at the end of the year.

Transition to Adult Services

B.C. Children’s Hospital: Transition to Adult Care

The goal of Transition to Adult Care is to support youth with special health care needs and their families or caregivers to gain the confidence, skills and knowledge to be ready to enter the adult health care system.
